Location Permissions on Android and iPhone: Common Browser Fixes
Find the right permission layer when a website cannot get location, and learn what a browser page can and cannot control.
Location permission can be controlled in more than one place. A website may need permission in the browser, while the browser itself also needs permission in the phone’s operating-system settings. If either layer blocks access, the site may not receive a location result. Menu names differ across operating-system versions, so look for the current “Location” or “Site settings” controls on your device.
Check the phone-level setting
Make sure the device’s Location setting is enabled. If the browser is denied location access at the operating-system level, changing the website permission alone may not fix it. On some devices, precise-location controls are separate from general location access; available options depend on the operating system and browser.
Check the browser’s site permission
Open the browser’s settings for the current website and inspect Location. If it is blocked, change it only if you want the site to use location. You may need to reload the page after changing the setting. If the browser never prompts, check whether the permission was previously denied or whether the page is running in an unsupported context.
Check HTTPS and browser compatibility
Modern browsers restrict geolocation to secure contexts, usually HTTPS, with localhost treated specially for development. If the site is opened as a local file or through an insecure HTTP address, location access may be unavailable. Use the site’s secure domain and a current browser.
Clear a stuck permission state carefully
If the permission appears inconsistent, close the page, review the site permission, then reopen it. Clearing all browser data is a broader step and may remove saved settings, so try the site-specific permission first. Do not install unknown “GPS booster” apps or grant unrelated permissions to make a website work.
Know the limits
A browser page cannot force the operating system to provide a location, cannot guarantee background operation and cannot repair faulty hardware. If several trusted apps fail in the same place, consult the device maker’s support guidance. If only one website fails, contact its operator with the error message and browser details.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the browser not ask for permission?
Permission may already be saved, blocked at the system level, or unavailable because the page is not in a secure supported context.
Should I allow location all the time?
For a page used in the foreground, choose the least access that supports your intended use. Do not grant broader access than needed.
