Frequently Asked Questions About GPS Speed, Distance and Browser Tracking

Direct answers to common questions about zero readings, speed spikes, distance drift, privacy, units and when not to rely on a browser tracker.

These answers cover the most common questions people have when using a browser-based GPS speedometer. Results depend on the device and environment, so the goal is to explain likely causes and safe next steps rather than promise a particular accuracy.

Why does the speed stay at zero?

The browser may not have received a fresh fix, the location permission may be blocked, or the device may not provide a speed field for that update. Check permission and system location settings, then test in an open-sky location while safely stopped.

Why does speed briefly jump to a very high number?

Two consecutive location fixes can be far apart because of noise, stale data or a poor signal. If software calculates speed from that gap, the result can spike. Do not treat an isolated peak as a real speed unless the surrounding readings and conditions support it.

Why does distance grow while standing still?

The reported position can drift by several metres or more. If the tracker counts those changes, the total can rise. Filtering reduces some drift but can also ignore real small movements; no simple filter eliminates every error.

Why is a phone different from a vehicle display?

They use different measurement inputs and update methods. The vehicle may use wheel sensors and calibration, while the phone receives an operating-system location estimate. Differences are expected and are not enough on their own to diagnose a fault.

Does the website save my exact route?

The displayed calculations can happen locally, but place-name lookup may send coordinates to a third-party service, and ordinary hosting or third-party scripts can process connection data. Read the Privacy Policy and provider terms. You can revoke location access in the browser.

Can I use it for official or safety-critical measurement?

No. It is not a certified measuring instrument. Follow road rules, use approved vehicle instruments and use specialist equipment for aviation, surveying, emergency or legal tasks.
