GPS Speed in MPH and KM/H: How to Choose the Right Unit

Understand miles per hour and kilometres per hour, how to switch units, and why conversion does not improve GPS accuracy.

Updated: 27 October 2026 · Informational guide · Estimates are not certified measurements

Speed units describe the same physical quantity using different scales. A GPS speed tracker may show kilometres per hour (km/h) or miles per hour (mph), but the underlying location estimate is still supplied by the phone and operating system. Selecting a different unit changes how a value is displayed; it does not make the GPS fix more or less accurate.

The conversion relationship

One mile is approximately 1.609 kilometres. To convert mph to km/h, multiply by 1.609; to convert km/h to mph, divide by 1.609. For example, 30 mph is about 48.3 km/h, while 50 km/h is about 31.1 mph. Small rounding differences are normal when a screen displays only whole numbers. Never compare values until you confirm that both instruments use the same unit.

Choose a unit for the task

Use the unit familiar to the place where you travel and to the instrument you are comparing. Many countries display road speeds in km/h, while others use mph. For exercise, a runner may prefer min/km or min/mile rather than speed. A unit setting should be easy to identify so a value is not misread as a different scale.

Why a correct conversion can still look wrong

If the number changes dramatically after switching units, check whether the app is converting the current speed, top speed and distance consistently. A display bug can affect one field while another is correct. Also check that you did not compare current speed with average speed or confuse metres with kilometres. Write down the original number and unit before troubleshooting.

Practical check

Use a known conversion as a simple display check: 10 m/s is 36 km/h, or about 22.4 mph. This does not test the phone's GPS accuracy; it only helps confirm that unit labels and arithmetic are plausible. For safety-critical or legal decisions, rely on approved instruments and local rules, not a browser display.

Frequently asked questions

Does changing mph to km/h improve accuracy?

No. It changes the displayed scale, not the location data or its uncertainty.

Why is the converted number not exact?

The interface may round values for readability. Compare with the same number of decimal places when testing conversions.
