Why GPS Speed Can Drop, Jump or Freeze on a Phone
A troubleshooting guide for stale speed readings, location permission errors, indoor reception and browser background restrictions.
If a browser speedometer suddenly shows zero, jumps to an implausible value or stops updating, that does not automatically mean the sensor has failed. The page depends on the browser receiving location updates from the operating system. This guide walks through the most common causes and checks that do not require installing extra software.
Check permission and device location settings
The site needs permission to use location. Check the browser’s site settings and the phone’s system-level location setting. If permission was denied previously, the page may not be able to request it again until the setting is changed. On a secure HTTPS origin, supported browsers can expose the Geolocation API; insecure or restricted contexts may block it.
Give the receiver a better environment
Indoors, under a roof, inside a tunnel or among tall buildings, satellite signals may be weak or reflected. Move to a safe open area and wait for several updates. Do not stand in a roadway or operate a phone while driving to improve reception. If the location accuracy value remains large, treat the speed estimate cautiously.
Understand zero and missing speed
A browser location result can contain coordinates but no speed estimate. The speed field may be null if the browser cannot provide it. A website may then display zero, a placeholder or a calculated estimate depending on its implementation. A zero display is not proof that the device has measured a true stationary state.
Browser tabs and battery restrictions
Some mobile operating systems reduce background activity or suspend tabs when the screen is locked, the browser is hidden or battery saver is active. For a test, keep the page visible, keep the device charged and avoid switching repeatedly between apps. Behaviour varies by phone and browser; a web page cannot override every operating-system restriction.
When the problem persists
Reload the page after checking permissions, update the browser and test another location-dependent site. If several apps show the same problem, review system location settings or the device manufacturer’s support guidance. If only this page fails, note the browser name, device model, whether the page is HTTPS and the exact on-screen error before reporting it to the site owner.
Frequently asked questions
Why does it work outside but not indoors?
Satellite reception is often much weaker indoors. The operating system may still estimate a location from other sources, but speed can be unavailable or less stable.
Can I use the tool with the screen locked?
Do not assume continuous updates in a background tab. Mobile browsers and operating systems may pause or throttle the page.
