GPS Speed and Running Pace: Converting Speed into Minutes per Kilometre
Understand the relationship between running speed and pace, including why GPS jitter affects short intervals.
Runners often think in pace, such as minutes per kilometre or minutes per mile, rather than speed in km/h. Pace is the time needed to cover a unit of distance, so it moves in the opposite direction to speed: a lower minutes-per-kilometre number means a faster pace. GPS noise can make live pace fluctuate sharply.
The relationship
Pace in minutes per kilometre is 60 divided by speed in km/h. For example, 10 km/h corresponds to 6 minutes per kilometre; 12 km/h corresponds to 5 minutes per kilometre. These conversions are mathematical, but the input speed from a phone may still be uncertain, especially at the start of a run or under trees.
Why live pace jumps
Running involves changing stride and direction, and location estimates may update irregularly. If a pace calculation uses a short noisy distance interval, the result can jump from fast to slow. A longer smoothing window makes pace calmer but can hide short surges and changes in effort.
Use lap averages for context
A pace averaged over a longer interval can be easier to interpret than an instantaneous value. Be aware of whether the app pauses during stops and how it defines a lap. Compare similar routes and conditions rather than judging progress from one noisy sample.
Health and safety context
A GPS pace is a measurement aid, not a medical assessment. Use perceived effort and appropriate training guidance, and stop if you feel unwell or unsafe. Do not chase a pace number when conditions, traffic or terrain make the activity unsafe.
Frequently asked questions
What is the pace at 10 km/h?
Six minutes per kilometre, before accounting for GPS measurement error.
Why is pace slower when speed is higher?
Pace is time per distance, so less time per kilometre means faster movement.
