Local Storage and Saved Trip Stats: What Browser Data Means

Understand browser local storage, clearing site data and why local saving is not the same as a server backup.

A website may store preferences or session statistics in browser local storage. This data is associated with the browser profile and site origin; it is not automatically synchronised to a server or available on another device. Clearing site data, using private browsing or changing browsers may remove it.

Local storage is device-specific

If a site saves a unit preference or trip summary in local storage, that value usually stays in the current browser profile. It may disappear when site data is cleared or when private browsing ends. A website should not describe local storage as a secure account backup unless a real synchronisation service exists.

Local does not mean risk-free

Other people who can use an unlocked device or browser profile may see information stored there. Browser extensions and device access can also affect privacy. Avoid storing precise route history or sensitive information unless there is a clear need and appropriate protection.

Explain what is saved

A transparent interface should tell users whether it saves preferences, current session data or past trips. It should provide a clear reset or deletion method where appropriate. The privacy policy must match the code: if the page stores a trip total locally, it should not claim that absolutely no data is stored anywhere.

Troubleshooting missing data

If a saved statistic disappears, check whether you changed browsers, cleared site data, used private mode or restored the device. If the tool only saves locally, there may be no way to recover the old value. Users should export or record important information through a supported method rather than assume cloud backup.

Frequently asked questions

Does local storage sync between my phone and laptop?

No, not unless the website implements a separate sync service.

Can I recover data after clearing browser storage?

Usually not through the website if no server backup or export exists.
