GPS Distance on Long Routes: Gaps, Turns and Accumulated Error

How missing updates, route geometry and repeated position noise affect a long trip-distance estimate.

Longer routes provide more samples, but they also create more opportunities for signal gaps, device pauses and accumulated noise. A long route total should be interpreted as an estimate derived from the recorded points, not as a perfect record of every metre travelled.

The effect of a signal gap

When tracking stops in a tunnel or background state, the next position may be far from the previous one. Connecting those two points with a straight line can undercount a winding route, while a poor first point after the gap can overcount. The missing path cannot be reconstructed exactly from the endpoints alone.

Accumulation across many samples

Small positive and negative position errors do not always cancel neatly. A distance algorithm that adds every segment may accumulate extra distance from jitter. A filter can reduce some of it, but if it is too strong it may cut corners or omit small movements. The methodology used by the tool affects the result.

Preserving the session

Keep the page in the foreground if the browser requires it, ensure the device has enough battery and avoid changing tracking settings mid-session. If the browser is paused, the app may not know that it missed points. For long outdoor activities, use a tool designed for background tracking if continuous logging is essential.

Review the route, not only the total

Look for obvious gaps, straight lines across bends, clusters of wandering points or sudden distance jumps. If the site only shows a number and not the route, remember that the total cannot reveal every recording issue. Use the same method for repeated comparisons and document the conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Does a long trip automatically become accurate?

No. Long routes can reduce relative impact of some errors but can still contain gaps and drift.

Can a website reconstruct missing route points exactly?

No. It can estimate, but exact recovery requires data that was not recorded.
