Instantaneous Speed vs Average Speed: Do Not Compare Different Metrics
Understand the difference between current, average and maximum speed and why different devices may show different numbers.
A speed display can represent several different quantities. Instantaneous speed estimates movement near the current moment; average speed is distance divided by elapsed time; maximum speed is the highest recorded sample or estimate. Comparing these values as if they were the same will produce misleading conclusions.
Current or instantaneous speed
A phone's location provider may supply a speed estimate, or an application may estimate speed from consecutive coordinates. Either approach has timing and noise limitations. The value can jump, lag or be unavailable at low speed. A smooth dial may visually interpolate between updates, but that does not mean a new measurement arrived at every animation frame.
Average speed depends on the timer
Average speed can include or exclude stopped time depending on the tool's definition. If one app uses total elapsed time and another pauses the timer during stops, the averages will differ even with identical distance. Check whether the start, stop and pause rules match before comparing results.
Maximum speed is especially sensitive to spikes
If the maximum is stored from every raw sample, one GPS spike can remain as the session's highest value. Some tools filter suspicious points; others do not. A maximum should therefore be interpreted cautiously unless the method and validation are documented. It is not a legal record or certified measurement.
A fair comparison checklist
Identify the metric, unit, time window, smoothing and treatment of stops. Compare current speed with current speed and average speed with average speed. If the app does not explain these details, treat its results as general information rather than an authoritative measurement.
Frequently asked questions
Is average speed the average of every displayed number?
Not necessarily. It is usually based on distance and elapsed time, but the tool's rules matter.
Can a single GPS spike affect top speed?
Yes, if the app records it without adequate filtering.
