Why GPS Speed Spikes Happen and How to Interpret Them

Troubleshoot sudden speed jumps caused by noisy positions, stale samples, timing and calculation choices.

A sudden speed spike can be caused by a poor position fix, a gap between updates, reflected signals or an algorithm that divides a position change by a short time interval. It does not necessarily mean the phone or vehicle actually accelerated to that value.

Position jump becomes speed

If a calculated speed uses distance between two coordinates divided by elapsed time, a position jump can create an implausibly high result. The effect is stronger when the time interval is short. A separate speed estimate from the operating system may behave differently, but it can also be noisy in poor conditions.

Look at supporting signals

Check the reported location accuracy, whether the timestamp is fresh and whether the spike persists across multiple updates. A single isolated peak surrounded by much lower values is less convincing than a sustained stable reading, but users should not invent a correction factor from that observation alone.

Reduce avoidable causes

Test outdoors with a clear sky view, keep the device stable, avoid repeated start/stop cycles and ensure the browser is not stuck with old data. A tracker can reject physically implausible jumps, but any threshold is a design choice and may remove unusual real movement as well as errors.

Treat top speed carefully

If one spike sets the session maximum, the top-speed value may remain elevated after the current speed returns to normal. A good tool should explain whether it filters outliers and allow users to reset a session. Do not use a phone's top-speed number for official records or legal purposes.

Frequently asked questions

Does a speed spike prove the GPS is broken?

Not by itself; it can be a transient positioning or timing error.

Why does the top speed stay high afterward?

The maximum stores the highest recorded value until the session is reset.
