Why GPS Speed Can Read Zero While You Are Moving

A troubleshooting checklist for zero speed, missing speed fields and delayed location updates.

Updated: 27 October 2026 · Informational guide · Estimates are not certified measurements

A zero speed reading can have several causes: the location provider may not supply a speed value, the device may be moving too slowly for a stable estimate, the page may be showing a stale point, or permission and reception problems may prevent new updates. First identify whether location itself is updating.

Separate location from speed

If the coordinates or location timestamp update but speed remains zero, the provider may not have a usable speed estimate at that moment. If neither location nor timestamp changes, the issue may be permission, background throttling or poor reception. These two situations need different troubleshooting steps.

Check permission and signal

Confirm that the browser has location permission and the operating system's location service is enabled. Move to an open area and wait for a fresh fix. Indoor positioning can identify a rough area without producing reliable movement speed. Do not keep tapping Start if the page may already have an active watch.

Check device and browser state

Reload the page after confirming permission, keep the tab visible during testing and disable restrictive battery settings only if you understand their effect and the device offers them. Exact menu names vary by operating-system version. A website cannot override a permission denial or force the operating system to deliver updates.

When to stop troubleshooting

If the value remains unavailable on several supported browsers and devices under clear-sky conditions, report the browser version, device model, permission state and approximate time to the site owner. Avoid sending precise home or travel coordinates in a public bug report. A browser speed tracker is not suitable for safety-critical use.

Frequently asked questions

Does zero always mean stationary?

No. It can mean unavailable, stale or filtered data as well as genuine stationary movement.

Should I reinstall the phone's GPS?

Start with browser permission, location settings, reception and a page reload; hardware repair is not the first step.
